Try it the other way.  Try to rank your website for general keywords first and get your site infront of thousands of visitors a day.   You check your rankings everyday and after a few days of not seeing your website anywhere, you’ll get discouraged and stop working on it.   It takes a long time and a lot of link building to get to page one of the search results with general keywords.  Plus, even when you do get there, your product is not going to be for everyone searching for it using general terms.  By using long tail keywords, you will be sending highly targeted traffic relevant to your website.  Traffic that converts to sales.

What should you use to target this traffic?  Well, articles are good, videos are good, free web 2.0 blogs work great and anything else you can think of.  Just do your keyword research and pick the best long tail keywords to get the most targeted traffic possible to your website.
